BRAZILIAN BLAZES

In 2020 roughly a quarter of Brazil’s vast Pantanal wetland, one of the planet’s most biodiverse places, has burned in wildfires worsened by climate change. Predicted drought and extreme rainfall are already being felt. This may impair the area’s ability to help regulate water for the continent and carbon for the world. In under 20 years the northern Pantanal may turn into a savanna or even an arid zone.
