NEXT DAY

THE OMINOUS WARNING CAME AS A SURPRISE TO VICKI. She was in a cab headed home when her cell phone rang. She didn’t recognize the number but answered it anyway. It could be one of her new supporters.

“Lay off the pipelines or you’re going to be very, very sorry,” the man said. “We know all about you, and we can shut you down. Permanently.”

But you don’t know that I have a solid security system, Vicki thought as she hung up. And you don’t know that I’m well trained to protect myself. Still, it was unpleasant to have yesterday’s success diminished. She smiled as she thought about the banner they’d hung. We pulled it off! Now she needed to concentrate on what she was going to do next. She had met with one of the MIT students that afternoon. The plan they came up with wasn’t likely to create anything more than a minimal stir, but was worthwhile nonetheless. The younger generation was beginning to be fired up.

She would add more fuel to the fire.
