After Portugal’s massive wildfires and extreme heat waves this summer, six Portuguese children and youth appeared in the European Court of Human Rights on September 27th for a landmark lawsuit against 32 European nations charged with violating their human rights due to the impacts of climate change. The governments sued must legally justify the gap between their climate policies and what science says is needed. It’s the Court’s third climate case heard this year. Earlier a group of older Swiss women argued they were disproportionately affected by the climate crisis and wanted Switzerland ordered to do more to cut emissions. A claim brought by a former French politician argued France was breaching his human rights.
