YET ANOTHER WAKE-UP CALL

The past eight years are on track to be the eight warmest on record. The rate of sea level rise has doubled since 1993. Atmospheric levels of the three main greenhouse gases–-CO2, methane and nitrous oxide reached new record highs in 2021. Ocean heat was also at record levels. Initial indications of record-shattering melt on glaciers in the European Alps occurred in 2022. Greenland’s ice sheet lost mass for the 26th consecutive year. Arctic sea-ice extent was below the long-term average for most of the year. Antarctic sea-ice extent dropped to the lowest level on record.
