WASTE NOT WASTED

The European Commission recently decided to set new, ambitious targets for biomethane production and other fuel sources. Organic matter releases biogas, which can be collected and purified to produce methane, or biomethane. Chemically identical to natural gas, it can also be burned to make electricity or sent via a gas grid to household boilers. Anaerobic digesters can run on various materials, including sewage sludge, animal fat, seaweed, forestry waste and grass cuttings, discarded household food, and animal manure. It releases carbon already in circulation while natural gas releases carbon that otherwise would have remained locked underground, and can be produced in far more locations than natural gas. There are numerous problems with biomethane production that need consideration, however.
