WASTE NOT, WANT NOT

It’s estimated that if food waste was a country, it would be the third largest emitter of greenhouse gases after the US and China. Roughly 30% of the food produced is wasted–about 1.8 billion tons a year. Ending food waste would eliminate 8% of our total emissions.

There’s hope. For example, Food Link in Massachusetts collects unwanted nutritious food from grocery stores and others and distributes 48,000 pounds of it to hungry people every month. In 2019 it rescued 305 tons, enough for over 500,000 meals. Imagine what would happen if this wonderful non-profit organization had replication everywhere.
