UKRAINE’S DISASTROUS IMPACT ON CLIMATE CHANGE

Just some of the contributions to the climate crisis from the war in Ukraine include: exhaust from constant traffic of fleeing civilians; residents burning firewood to stay warm; smoke above military bases; massive amounts of energy expended to fly fighter jets, fire missiles, move and supply soldiers, or send a convoy of tanks; clear-cutting forests to house refugees and power camps with gas generators; and Italy and Germany needing to replace natural gas and other fuel from Russia (Italy now has provisional plans to reopen previously shut coal plants and Germany may delay plans to close its last coal plants until 2030) Ukraine’s main power plant now having to use reserves of low-grade, high-polluting fuel.
