Hundreds of millions of dark money dollars went into nominating and confirming the three judges appointed to the Supreme court by Trump. Among groups leading these campaigns was an organization set up by the Koch brothers: oil tycoons with longstanding funding of rightwing causes. And there’s strong correlation between oil and gas money US senators have received, and their approval of Trump’s nominations. With the favored justices in place, these networks started using their financial power to steer their decisions, doing so through “amicus briefs”: advice notes to the court supporting a plaintiff’s position. These briefs are now one of the most powerful lobbying tools with funders not just ‘friends of the court’ – frequently they’re quite literally friends of the judges they favored. As long as money buys the decisions desired by them, America’s ability to help solve the climate crisis is doomed.
