SPLENDID SEAWEED

Livestock account for 14.5% of man-made greenhouse gases. 40% is methane produced by cattle digestion. When added to their feed, the red seaweed species reduces methane in beef steers by more than 80%, possibly even 98% without adverse effects on the cows’ weight or the quality of beef produced. Seaweed can be used for biofuels, fertilizer, and biodegradable plastics. It’s a nutritious, vegetarian food. By removing CO2 from the ocean, seaweeds decrease harmful acidification. Unlike conventional agriculture, seaweed farming doesn’t require fresh water, fertilizer or external inputs. Hence, no need to clear land to cultivate it.
