SAVING THE GRID

Virtual power plants may save the Grid. Networks of thousands of home-based batteries could mean a cleaner, more reliable electricity system. Utilities and battery companies now have networks with thousands of participants in California, Utah and Vermont, among others. Most of the electricity from the batteries is generated by rooftop solar. When demand is highest, the utility has the ability to draw electricity from the batteries to support the grid, adding megawatts of capacity. Customers receive credits on their bills for the electricity they contribute.
