REDUCING PLASTIC WASTE

Worldwide, a striking 40% of plastic waste is packaging, most of it single-use and much escaping into the environment where it survives for decades. Fortunately, scientists have created a plastic alternative that’s transparent, strong, nonabsorbent (won’t get soggy) and disappears in two months, and is completely edible. The researchers see routes for more sustainable production by using food waste streams as the raw materials to nourish a productive bacteria species used to make the new product.
