POTENTIAL SUDDEN ICE COLLAPSE

More than 60% of the massive floating ice shelves extending from Antarctica could fracture and collapse with astonishing rapidity. Surging meltwater from warmer seas could cause the shelves to undergo a process called hydrofracturing,  potentially triggering collapses within hours or even minutes. This would accelerate sea level rise, causing devastating coastal flooding around the world.
