Tar sands (or oil sands) extraction averages about 70% more greenhouse gas per unit of energy than the global mean. Enbridge, the Canadian company targeting Weymouth, is likely to become the world’s fifth largest exporter of this filthy fuel by 2020. Fortunately some of the world’s largest financial institutions and insurance companies have stopped putting their money behind oil production in Alberta. And yet, here we are in Massachusetts, allowing Enbridge to damage Weymouth and the entire Fore River basin.
