LONGER LASTING LITHIUM SULFUR BATTERIES

Simply by adding sugar, researchers have created a longer-lasting, lighter, more sustainable rival to  lithium-ion batteries that are essential for aviation, electric vehicles and submarines. In theory, lithium-sulfur batteries could store two to five times more energy than lithium-ion batteries of the same weight. An ultra-high-capacity design could quadruple camera battery life and run a smartphone for 5 consecutive days without a charge. Using a glucose-based additive on the positive electrode they managed to stabilize lithium-sulfur battery technology, something previously problematic. It is hoped this improved technology will help make lithium sulfur batteries lead the next generation of batteries.
