IDA IS NO SURPRISE

There has been a substantial regional and global increase in the proportion of the strongest hurricanes–category 4 and 5 storms. The number of major cyclones (category 3, 4, and 5) is projected to increase by 20% globally and 29% in the Atlantic by 2081-2100. A significant increase in major systems may occur even sooner. A category 6 might have to be added in the early 21st century. NOAA says 85% of all damages from hurricanes come from category 3, 4, and 5 storms. One with 150-mph wind speed has 256 times the damage potential of one with 75-mph winds.
