It’s hard to find sources for biodegradable polymers without competing uses. Dead flies could be turned into biodegradable plastic from farming black soldier flies. Fly larvae contain proteins plus nutritious compounds so are being raised for animal feed. Adult flies are discarded. Hopefully scientists will soon be able to create bioplastics such as polycarbonates or polyurethanes, traditionally made from petrochemicals, from the flies. This could reduce the dependence on fossil fuels, lowering plastic production’s carbon footprint and not contributing to the plastic pollution problem.
