FRINGE FARMLANDS CAN CAPTURE CO2

Rock weathering has such significant carbon-fixing potential that it can supercharge our path towards our climate targets. UK studies show this technique could capture 45% of the carbon needed to reach the country’s net zero goals. These studies have focused on wetter climates. That’s because moisture facilitates the weathering process locking carbon into rock. But crushing rock into dust accelerates a natural rock weathering process that traps CO2. And enhanced rock weathering might lock away tons of CO2 fairly rapidly when spread on inhospitable, arid fringe farmlands, while locking up as much carbon as planting a trillion trees.
