Planting eucalyptus trees where cattle graze can turn grassland into land dotted with trees. Around 250-350 trees per hectare might be the optimal number to keep Brazilian farms financially viable, producing 25 cubic meters of wood per hectare per year and sequestering up to five tons of CO2 equivalent to the emissions from about 12 adult cattle. The trees can be used for construction or furniture, keeping their stored carbon locked out of the air. Planted with trees, the quality of the pasture improves and is more nutritious forĀ cows. They fatten up faster, spending less time in the pasture before slaughter, resulting in less time to emit methane.
