DAMAGING DAMS

Lower-than-forecast water levels in a dam reservoir have created an unforeseen
structural problem in addition to longstanding environmental, social and
economic concerns about the Belo Monte dam complex. It is the world’s fourth
largest hydroelectric project. A continuing decrease in water levels is anticipated
as a result of climate change. On top of that dams release methane, adding to
warming temperatures.

Belo Monte dam.
