CLIMEWORKS CARBON CAPTURE

Europe could theoretically store at least 4,000 billion tons of CO2 in rocks while the U.S could store at least 7,500 billion tons. The Swiss company Climeworks uses technology from Carbfix, to run Orca. The plant gets CO2 from the air, and buries it. Located near the Hellisheiði geothermal power plant (it provides the renewable energy needed to run Climeworks machines), Orca removes 4,000 tons of CO2 per year, equal to the emissions of 870 cars or 9,281 consumed barrels of oil. Made of eight stackable container-sized collector units employing a modular system, the plant uses these large fans to pull in the air and pass it through a filtration system. Carbfix mixes the captured carbon dioxide with water and pumps it deep underground, trapping it permanently and safely in the stone under the plant through mineralization which is a natural occurrence where the CO₂ reacts with basalt rock.
