CALIFORNIA CASUALTY

The economic costs of California wildfires in 2018 totaled more than $150 billion (about 0.7 percent of the entire U.S. gross domestic product), with costs extending far beyond burned areas. Direct capital impact (burned buildings and homes) accounted for $27.7 billion, 19% of the total; $32.2 billion (22%), came from air pollution health effects; and $88.6 billion in losses (59%), was indirectly caused by disruption of economic supply chains, including impediments to transportation and labor.

The State’s record-breaking wildfires in 2020 have consumed more than 4.1 million acres, and the year isn’t over yet with costs yet to be determined.
