CALAMITOUS COAL

The US Energy Information Administration says US coal production is projected to rise 3% in 2022 even as coal-fired generation decreases. China and India produce almost 60% of the world’s coal, and are expected to increase production by more than 200 million tons per year, collectively. China pledged to start cutting down coal consumption in 2026, but the country announced construction of 43 new coal-fired power plants to meet energy demand until then. By 2024, China’s coal consumption is forecasted to rise by 3.3% and India’s by 12.2%, which would make them responsible for two-thirds of the world’s coal consumption.
