AWESOME AQUIFER THERMAL ENERGY

Aquifer thermal energy storage systems can largely contribute to climate-friendly heating and cooling of buildings. Heated water stored underground can be pumped up, if needed. These storage systems, i.e. water-bearing layers in the underground, are suited well for seasonal storage and flexible use of heat and cold. Water has a high capacity for storing thermal energy. Surrounding rocks have an insulating effect. The systems are accessed by boreholes and used to store heat from solarthermal plants or waste heat from industrial facilities. They can be combined perfectly with heat networks and heat pumps. Widespread application of aquifer storage can very substantially reduce the demand for oil and gas, while reducing air and water pollution.
