AWESOME AIRBORNE WIND POWER

A gigantic sail like that used by paragliders or kitesurfers is creating electricity for the grid off the African coast. Looping figures-of-eight overhead, it’s the size of a three-bedroom apartment. It’s the world’s first fully autonomous commercial “airborne wind energy” system. For the past two months it’s been delivering a little less than 100 kilowatts, typically enough to power up to 50 homes. In general the higher you go, the faster the wind. An airborne system can reach up to half a mile high, far above the 660 to 980 tip of the tallest wind turbines. It could mean 4.5 times greater power than at ground level.
