ANTARCTIC ALERT

East Antarctica’s Conger Ice Shelf collapsed during the region’s unprecedented March heat wave, with parts of the area seeing temperatures 40 degrees Celsius (104 degrees Fahrenheit) above normal, the warming attributed to an atmospheric river. Ice shelves slow Antarctica’s glaciers contribution to global sea level rise by holding back the flow of ice into the sea. EAST Antarctica was considered less vulnerable than West Antarctica. Scientists fear these kinds of events are going to happen faster than they thought would be the case.
