Rising temperatures in the Himalayas will melt at least one-third of the region’s glaciers by the end of the century even if the world’s most ambitious climate change targets are met. If global warming and greenhouse gas emissions continue at current rates, two-thirds of those glaciers could be lost by 2100. Today a hydroelectric dam project was largely swept away when a glacier broke and caused sudden, massive flooding. Three bodies have been recovered but 150 people are unaccounted for. Unconfirmed videos on social media showed violent surges of water heading down mountain gorges, washing away bridges and what looked like hydroelectric structures.
