The amount of CO2 in the Earth’s atmosphere set a record in May, again reaching the highest levels in human history despite a temporary dip in the burning of fossil fuels worldwide thanks to the coronavirus pandemic. CO2 levels atop Hawaii’s Mauna Loa volcano showed that levels in the air averaged 419 parts per million. Researchers estimate there hasn’t been this much of it in the atmosphere for millions of years. Total annual emissions are currently expected to rise at their second-fastest pace ever this year.
