A simple, clever twist in solar tower design produces power 24/7. Unlike conventional unidirectional towers, which rely on hot air rising, this design combines the upward and downward flow of air. The new twin-technology tower could bring down cost by producing over twice as much power as previous designs. It’s estimated that it would generate a total of about 753 megawatt-hours of energy annually, about 2.14 times the power of a traditional solar updraft tower. They haven’t been built yet at a commercial scale.
