STUNG BY A STING JET

The UK’s recent storm Eunice had record gusts of up to 122 miles an hour even without a sting jet. It could be hit by more than double the number of storms with exceptional wind speeds. For the first time nearly half of all cyclones in the North Atlantic region may be accompanied by powerful sting jets, an increase of 40%. And there will likely be an increase of 60% in dangerous weather bombs with sting jets.

Sting jets are small, narrow airstreams that can form inside a storm and produce intense winds over an area smaller than 100 km. Occurring in a certain type of extratropical cyclone, these airstreams form around 5km above the Earth’s surface then descend, accelerating as they do and bringing along fast-moving air from high in the atmosphere.
