A shipboard system could remove up to 50% of carbon dioxide emitted from shipping vessels. As ships move through seawater, CO2 from their exhaust would be absorbed into water pumped onboard, making it slightly more acidic, and then passed through a bed of limestone, where the acid would react with the rock to form bicarbonate. The treated water, now stripped of CO2, would then be discharged back into the ocean.
