Interior finishes may be responsible for as much as 10.8% of a new home’s material carbon emissions. Adaptavate has created something that can replace drywall and store carbon. Breathaboard is made of agricultural feedstock mixed with lime and pressed between paper. It’s alkaline, which resists mold and bacteria. Unlike drywall, when it gets wet, it doesn’t emit hydrogen sulfide gas which is highly corrosive and can be flammable. Drywall scraps (about 10% lost due to cutting and trimming) are treated as hazardous. In the U.S. alone, between 2.6 and 3.12 billion square feet of the stuff has to be handled separately. Breathaboard is totally compostable, biodegradable and non-toxic, and the waste or off-cuts can even be used as a fertilizer. It also includes reduced noise transfer, lighter weight, and better and better insulation properties.
