Growing use of nitrogen fertilizers in the production of food worldwide is increasing atmospheric concentrations of nitrous oxide, a greenhouse gas 300 times more potent than CO2 and remaining in the atmosphere over 100 years. This jeopardizes the climate goals of the Paris Agreement. The highest growth rates in emissions are in emerging economies, particularly Brazil, China and India, with their increased livestock and crop production.
