The Tibetan Plateau, known as the ‘water tower’ of Asia, supplies freshwater for nearly two billion people who live downstream. It is projected that climate change, under a scenario of weak climate policy, will cause irreversible declines in the region’s freshwater storage, constituting a total collapse of the water supply for central Asia and Afghanistan and a near-total collapse for Northern India, Kashmir and Pakistan by 2060. Even in a best-case scenario, further losses are likely unavoidable, which will require substantial adaptation to decreasing water resources.

Water from the Tibetan Plateau supplies a lot of major rivers, some flowing through China and/or southeast Asia to the Pacific Ocean, and others flowing to the Indian Ocean.
