Hotter temperatures may render natural insect repellents less effective against mosquitoes. A pain receptor (TRPA1) becomes less sensitive in them when exposed to heat–the chemical cues typically triggering insect avoidance behaviors are prevented from activating as strongly. And as the climate warms, more extended breeding periods per season will worsen the spread of mosquito-borne disease.
