Lyme isn’t the only worrisome tick disease in the Northeast. Babesiosis, which can cause flulike symptoms or worse, and could be spreading because of rising temperatures and the growing deer population–two factors that help ticks thrive. Ticks, which prefer warm, wet conditions, have expanded their territory northward. Cases more than doubled in some Northeastern states between 2011 and 201. The disease, which for decades was extremely rare in the U.S., is now endemic in 10 states in the Northeast and the Midwest.
