The U.S. is the world’s largest liquefied natural gas exporter. LNG leaves a greenhouse gas footprint 33% worse than coal, with processing and shipping taken into account. Natural gas and shale gas are bad for the climate but liquefied natural gas is worse. Methane and carbon dioxide emissions released during LNG’s extraction, processing, transportation and storage account for approximately half of its total greenhouse gas footprint. The ships transporting LNG have lower CO2 emissions than steam-powered ships. But methane slips through as emitted exhaust gas, putting more into the atmosphere.
