Big oil faces a soaring number of climate-focused lawsuits filed by cities, states, other government organizations, environmental groups, Indigenous tribes and individuals—50 in US courts, 24 in European countries, five in Australia and four in Nigeria. Cases filed against those companies globally each year have nearly tripled since 2015 with 86 cases filed and 40 currently pending. No fossil fuel company has yet been forced to pay climate damages. Potential liabilities are massive, the sector’s largest polluters estimated to be responsible for trillions in lost homes, livelihoods and infrastructure.
