From 2014 to 2016, North America’s Pacific coast experienced the longest recorded and still most severe marine heatwave. Species from sea stars to seabirds died on unprecedented scales. Unusual mortality was noted in several marine mammal species with widespread kelp and seagrass declines. Many kelp forests collapsed. More about blob heatwaves later.
