HIP BOOTS

Scene from the side of my porch

Sea level has risen about 8 inches since 1880, and it’s accelerating. That dramatically increases chances of severely damaging floods. These could more than double by 2030 over widespread areas of the U.S. where nearly 5 million people live in homes less than 4 feet above high tide. Scientists expect roughly 2 to 7 more feet of sea level rise this century.
A building near me in Arlington, MA, far from the coast, is likely to be flooded at some point because the Mystic River watershed that feeds the area comes in from the ocean.

  1. In places like Winthrop, where I live, the threat of bigger storm surges and more severe flooding is a big topic of local conversation. It keeps me focused on doing all we can to reduce carbon pollution and thus avoid the worst impacts from the climate crisis…

  2. Check out what sea level rise will mean for local communities with Climate Central’s Surging Seas website. All communities on the coast will be affected but did you know that some communities with no coastline will also be flooded? Check out sealevel.climatecentral.org

The Facts About Sea Level Rise Global warming has raised global sea level about 8 inches since 1880, and the rate of rise is accelerating. Rising seas dramatically increase the odds of damaging floods from storm surges.
