Berkeley, California-based carbon transformation company Twelve and Tulsa-based Emerging Fuels Technology (EFT) have produced the first fossil-free jet fuel from CO2 using an electrochemical process. The new biofuel, called E-Jet, can be used by both commercial and military aviation. It’s made with carbon transformation technology, a new electrochemical reactor and proprietary catalyst that electrifies CO2 and water, creating synthesis gas, CO + H2, which is then refined into carbon neutral jet fuel. It has over 90% lower lifecycle emissions because the carbon in the fuel is sourced from the air, not the ground. And, with fewer contaminants than petroleum-based fuels, it burns cleaner.
