A National Institutes of Health funded study dealt with the impact that climate labels had on a sample fast food menu in terms of their influence on participants’ food choices in favor of more climate-friendly items. Both high and low climate impact labels markedly reduced red meat selections compared to the control group. Menus with a “high climate impact” label on burgers increased non-beef choices by 23% compared to the control group. Menus including “low climate impact” labels increased non-beef choices, such as a chicken sandwich or a salad, by about 10% more. With high impact labels having the stronger effect well worth including, they would be a good option for the future. Another study by the University of Bristol had similar results.
