Texas has continued to issue thousands of flaring permits. Although State regulators have raised doubts about flaring permits, they’re rarely rejected. Oil and gas companies are sometimes forced to flare gas during emergencies, but more often they flare unwanted gas that comes to the surface in the oil drilling process. In addition to releasing methane and other hazardous air pollutants, including volatile organic compounds, flaring contributes to ground-level ozone, causing respiratory illness, heart disease, and pre-term births.
