Hundreds of thousands of fish washed up dead along Texas beaches over the weekend as weather, water, and temperature conditions depleted the necessary oxygen. Climate change can make this kind of event ever more likely since cooler water can hold much more oxygen than warmer water, and ocean temperatures are rising. When water temperature rises above 70 degrees Fahrenheit, it becomes hard for Texas menhaden to receive enough oxygen to survive, and low-oxygen events, also known as hypoxia, are increasing in coastal waters.
