DYING OLMSTED PARKS

Several parks designed by Olmsted (father of landscape architecture) and his sons are now dying from threats that include climate change. He’s best known for Manhattan’s Central Park and Boston’s “Emerald Necklace”. 12 Olmsted landscapes face challenges. The California State Park system faces an onslaught of wildfires, drought, and eroding coasts. Hot temperatures at Downing Park in Newburgh, New York, are causing algal blooms and loss of trees. Florida’s Lake Wales—a city whose charm comes from streets designed by Olmsted’s firm with trees and plant features—has been slammed repeatedly by destructive hurricanes that are changing the landscape. I shudder to think what could happen to the beautiful Olmsted park in Arlington where I live.
