East Antarctica’s Denman Glacier has retreated 5 kilometers, nearly 3 miles, in the past 22 years. The shape of the ground surface beneath the ice sheet could make it even more susceptible to climate-driven collapse. It appears to be creeping down a slope that plunges into extreme depths. That could ignite a feedback process unloading trillions of tons of ice into the ocean and raising sea levels five feet worldwide.
