The western U.S. and northern Mexico face a progressing megadrought worse than anything known from recorded history. A warming climate is playing a key role. With hotter air holding more moisture, that moisture is being pulled from the ground. This has intensified drying of soils already starved of precipitation as temperatures have risen.
