The meat and dairy sector is responsible for over 14% of global greenhouse gas emissions. Cows emit large amounts of emissions through burps and farts. Livestock sector expansion is driving rising emissions as meat consumption grows. Meat and dairy companies have been linked to Amazon deforestation and other vital carbon sinks, with vast swathes of forest cut down for ranching or to allow production of soy exported for animal feed. But meat and dairy giants are investing just a fraction of their revenues into cutting emissions. Company spending on advertising has outstripped that on low-carbon solutions while also spending millions on marketing sustainability claims.
