COASTAL CALAMITY

To date, the UN Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) has assumed a rise of around one meter by 2100 with high greenhouse gas emissions. But new calculations by Nanyang Technological University show that, depending on how greenhouse gas emissions develop in the coming years, we can expect a rise of up to 1.9 meters, almost twice as high with fatal consequences for some of the world’s coasts. Half of the world’s population lives closer than 25 kilometers to the nearest coastline. More than 130 cities with over a million inhabitants are located on coastlines.
