In 2013 a group of Philippines organizations and individuals there and elsewhere petitioned the Philippines Commission on Human Rights to investigate whether fossil fuel companies violate or threaten to violate human rights by contributing to climate change. The commission’s report released this May, found that nearly 50 major fossil fuel companies should be held accountable for the human rights impacts of their carbon-producing activities and alter their practices to reduce climate risk. This could be an important development for climate litigation worldwide. In the past eight years, more than 1,200 cases of climate litigation have been filed, while only about 800 were filed from 1986 to 2014.
