Construction materials like concrete and plastic could lock away billions of tons of carbon dioxide. While bio-based plastics could take up the largest amount of carbon by weight, the largest potential for carbon storage is using carbonated aggregates (adding biochar made by heating waste biomass) to make concrete, the most popular building material worldwide. Over 20 billion tons are produced annually.
